​Doors Open Loyalist Township is an annual event that invites residents and visitors to explore the rich heritage of the area by offering free access to unique buildings, hidden gems and fascinating spaces. This celebration is part of the provincewide Doors Open Ontario initiative, which aims to connect people to local history and culture. ​

Participants can enjoy guided and self-guided tours of various heritage and cultural sites across Amherstview, Amherst Island, Wilton, Bath and Odessa. Past events have featured sites such as the Bath Museum and Visitor Centre (where exhibits span from pre-colonial times to the Second World War) and St. John's Church (which showcases architecture inspired by Sir Christopher Wren).

Amherst Island's Dry Stone Walls

When Irish settlers migrated to Amherst Island, they brought a unique way of building walls called dry stacking — layering stones without the use of mortar. This tradition has continued to this day. Although you can see beautiful displays of dry-stone stacking throughout the Island, visit Topsy Farms for an opportunity to speak to an actual dry stone waller!

Come and visit the Amherstview Fire Hall! The Emergency Services Department — formed in 1998 — protects 340 square kilometres (131 square miles) and 17,000 residents through four fire stations. The Pentland Cemetery — Amherst Island’s first non-denominational cemetery — was in service from 1831-2001. It runs between Front Road and Lake Ontario. The headstones record the predominantly Irish pioneer families that had settled on the Island. The first person buried in the cemetery was in 1831. St. John the Evangelist Anglican Church

St. John's was one of the first Anglican churches built in Upper Canada. It is the oldest one standing and in use in Ontario. Begun in 1793, the church was completed and used as a place of worship in 1794. Fire destroyed it in 1925 and it was rebuilt that same year, continuing to offer services to the present day.

St. Paul's Presbyterian Church

The congregation (established in 1852) worshipped in a frame church erected in 1851 just west of the present church. The original structure was moved to the Tugwell Farm, where it still stands. The limestone for the current church was cut and prepared by inmates of the Kingston Penitentiary. The cornerstone of the present sanctuary was laid in 1883.

Wilton Cenotaph

Unveiled on August 17, 1920, this cenotaph honours five members of the local community who passed away in the First World War: Walter Bush, William R. Davy, Herbert Blanchflower, James Hutchison and Harry Smooth. Walter Bush, a survivor of the Battle of Vimy Ridge, later died when struck by enemy artillery. Since 1867, the Wilton Cheese Factory has been a hub of cheese production. In 1921, a farmers’ co-operative took over, ramping up production to 226,800 kilograms (500,000 pounds) annually. In 1978, Arne M. Jensen purchased the factory, where they still continue the old-world curing process. Visit during Doors Open Loyalist Township to explore their history and savour their renowned cheese!

This limestone hall was originally the Wilton Wesleyan Methodist Church. It was built in the 1840s in what was then a thriving farming and mill community.
