Explore Toronto’s architectural, historical, cultural and socially significant buildings for free during the Doors Open weekend. For Doors Open 2025, we will be exploring the many sides of our playful city — for kids of all ages. From sports to music to theatre, Doors Open sites and programming will explore the joyful, irreverent and sometimes serious times of play. Get inspired by this "playground" we call home and explore Toronto's most beloved sites and buildings for free!

Franklin Carmichael Art Centre

The Franklin Carmichael Art Centre is a unique building that sits atop the Humber River ravine in north Etobicoke. The two-storey log structure is surrounded by a small park. The site was gifted to the then-Township of Etobicoke in 1959. The Centre is home to the Franklin Carmichael Art Group, which offers visual-arts instruction to adults and children.

Heliconian Hall, home to the Heliconian Club, is one of the oldest associations of its kind in Canada. Founded in 1909, it gives women artists, writers, musicians, dancers and actors opportunities to work together creatively. The hall itself dates to 1876 when Yorkville was still a village. Built for the Bell Telephone Company of Canada in 1926, this attractive commercial building has undergone heritage restoration, retaining original exterior and interior features, furniture and Bell artifacts. In 2001, the building was converted into private offices (now containing 32 companies). In 2022, an exterior event space was completed, featuring a cobblestone courtyard surrounded by gardens and lush green space.

Jarvis Street Baptist was one of the first churches in Canada to be built with an amphitheatre-style interior. Ground-floor seating is grouped in a semicircle, while the gallery above is horseshoe-shaped. The ceiling has a magnificent rosette-shaped stained-glass skylight. The main entrance is set under a tower with a copper spire. Don’t miss the gargoyles outside the entrance doors.

The grand, red-brick John McKenzie House is known for significant interior features such as its centre-hall plan, a vestibule door and sidelights with bevelled and leaded glass, a large leaded-art-glass window that lights the main staircase landing, panelled doors and original radiators. In 1993, the Ontario Historical Society moved into the restored house, where they have been headquartered since.

Ukrainian immigrants bought land in Kensington Market to build a synagogue. Completed in 1927, Kiever Synagogue’s exterior features twin-domed towers crowned with stars of David and two main staircase entrances. The interior includes a hand-carved Torah ark, paintings of biblical animals and signs of the zodiac. In 1979, the Kiever became the first building of Jewish significance to be designated.

Serving Scarborough for more than 175 years, Knox United Church, Agincourt held its first service in a wood-frame structure; the current brick church was built in 1872.
