All Nations Church

Built in 1887 as St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, this is now home to All Nations Church and is used by the Carleton Place Town Singers for performances. Constructed of limestone in the Scottish baronial style, the fanciful towers and turrets add interest to this imposing structure. Contrasting decorative courses and window and door details are constructed of dark Beckwith limestone.

Completed at a cost of about $26,000, Carleton Place Town Hall is a local landmark. Constructed of limestone, the town hall once housed a fire hall, police station, jail cells and library. Its elaborate exterior is complemented by an equally fine interior. Come and view the foyer's grand staircase, the council chambers, clerk’s office and the second-floor opera hall.

Granary Apartments, The

The 1898 Keyes Block was constructed to replace an earlier building destroyed by fire. Now home to Granary Natural Foods, the storefront windows retain their original copper mullions. The upper apartments feature Tudor-style arched windows, original woodwork and a unique glassed ventilation shaft. Owner Mark will be available to discuss the building’s history. Note: Apartments are only accessible by stairs.

This log building originally sat at the north end of Moore Street. Built by James Pearson Moore in c. 1873, a grocery store and confectionary shop operated here by the Moore family until 1973 when the building was donated to the town. It was moved to this location in 2007. It now is home to the town’s Tourism Information offices.

Old Federal Building (Post Office)

This building, designed by Thomas Fuller (architect of Ottawa’s Peace Tower and many post offices throughout Canada), was constructed of red sandstone atop a limestone foundation. It served as the post office/customs house until 1970 and has been converted into offices and apartments. During Doors Open, the main floor offices will be open. Ask about the clock, added in 1913.

Bishop's House of Glengarry, The

This stone landmark across from the St. Raphael’s Ruins was initially a presbytery for Father Alexander Macdonell, chaplain of the Glengarry Fencibles Light Infantry during the War of 1812, and later the first Bishop of Upper Canada. In 1924, symmetrical wings were added to each side of the presbytery in its transition to the renowned girls’ boarding school, Iona Academy.

Heritage Centre, The

The Heritage Centre, originally the Winchester Township Town Hall, served as a courthouse, drill hall, movie theatre, firehall and many other things. The Chesterville and District Historical Society took over the building in 1984 and has been collecting artifacts and researching local history since. The building is now maintained by the Township of North Dundas.

Canada's Penitentiary Museum

This museum was once the residence of the warden of the Kingston Penitentiary. Built by inmate workers, the home was first occupied in 1873. In 1933, most of the building was converted to administrative offices with a small apartment retained for penitentiary use. In 1985, the museum officially opened in only two rooms, but eventually became the sole occupant.

The restoration of this original 1871 railway station was the first major project of the Markham Village Conservancy, with restoration completed in 2000. The exterior paint colours were reproduced from c. 1910 when the rail line was part of the Grand Trunk Railway.
