Trenton Town Hall, constructed in the heart of Quinte West in 1861 by renowned architect Kivas Tully, was deemed a heritage building by the Trenton Town Council in 1983. Built in the classical revival style, this glorious building now houses various exhibits and cases filled with relics from the past – courtesy of the Trent Port Historical Society (including many photos of uniformed police officers, in honour of the site’s past life as a police station). A museum of cinema showcases old newspaper clippings, film posters and vintage cameras. There’s even a (now defunct) stage upstairs that was home to many community productions. This time capsule of local history is still popular today with filmmakers – including Sean Scally, whose video is shown below. As part of Digital Doors Open, watch this video and learn about Quinte’s past and some of their heritage buildings. In addition, the Trent Port Historical Society is featuring these other Scally videos: one about the effect of the Gilmour Lumber Company on the old-growth forests of the region, and another about the impact of the 1918 explosion of the British Chemical Co.
